Eastern Germany

ABOUT THIS TRAVEL

July- August 9915 days

INTRO

Kind of travel: alone in an independent travel

When: 28 July- 14 August 1999

How I moved: by train, hitch hiking, boat, kayaking and rollerblading

Baking or freezing?: perfect temperature and good weather with some rain but not that hassle

Where I slept: on the train, in the tent (everywhere) and youth hostels.

What I liked: Kayaking in the Muritz National Park has been a lot of fun and biking around the small Hiddense island (near Rugen) must not be missed. The strange Ferropolis site (Wittemberg) is a kind of kindergarten for adults.

What I disliked: German is expensive besides sometimes people are not as warm as they could

What you do need: a tent is the best way to save A LOT of money and a waterproof jacket will prevent you from getting soaked

ITINERARY

"This summer there’ll be the sun eclipse and I want to see it from the area where it’s 100%. Why don’t  take also the chance to visit the Eastern Germany?"
Hence with a tight budget in the pockets, a lot of enthusiasm and my rollerblades I bought an inter-rail ticket to travel without any limit in Germany.
A night train led me to Frankfurt en Main, where I directly headed to the nice town of Leipzeg. Here I spent two days rollerblading around and enjoying the nice sunny days I got. Anyway I was already looking forward to reach Ferropolis: it’s a former vast open-air quarry where enormous (you cannot image how much) rusty excavators can be climbed making like a kind of kindergarten for adults. I had a lot of fun.
I quickly passed by Berlin to end up finally in Stralsund where, after having unsuccessfully looked for a cheap accommodation, I set up the tent in a public park. The following morning I woke very early (otherwise surely somebody'd have knocked up...) and I boarded on the boat to Hidensee Island. In this peaceful place every motorised vehicle is forbidden and the whole island can be explored on foot or biking as I did. I found it extremely relaxing!!
Then the part of my travel through the Rugen peninsula began. I moved mainly hitch hiking and rollerblading while sleeping in the campsites; the time flew visiting the white cliffs, the lighthouse, the old train… After a while I got so used to hitch hike that I asked lifts even for few hundred meters.
After Rugen I completely changed environment reaching the Muritz National Park, where I rented a canoe and started a three days trip through the narrow channels, the small lakes and the swamp.(Read about it!)
Following this canoe trip I had a deserved rest in Berlin for few days. Finally I headed to Heildelberg and to Stuttgart to be in the area of 100% sun eclipse: it was the 11st August 1999.
