DOCUMENTS
EU citizens'll need just their ID, anyway
having the passport is always a good idea
MONEY
The currency is the Lei (sing.:Leu)
(1€= 4,1 lei). Pay attention that, to be precise,
it's the new lei, since few years ago the Lei was
divided by 1.000 creating the new Lei (now called
just Lei)
HEALTH
Even of stray dogs can be an issue I
didn't take any anti-rabies vaccine before leaving:
consider that in case of bite, a post-bite treatment
must be taken anyway (lighter if you'r vaccinated)
GUIDE
BOOK
I used Lonely Planet (in Italian 2nd
ed, translated from 4th ed, May 2007); I found it
particularly shallow in the details of the frequency
of the public means of transports (especially to reach
the villages) and also giving the distances (if LP
says from the Poienari fortress it's 1 km to the lake
Vidraru but in reality it's more than 5km (uphill!),
it makes a huge difference when you are walking back
and forth!!)
GENERAL
TIPS
Train/ bus schedule:
- CFR: Romanian Railways: the website
turned out very usefull to figure out all the schedules:
http://www.infofer.ro
(click on the english version)
There are several websites for the bus schedules
as well (ie http://www.autogari.ro).
You don't need to be a Romanian speaker to use them
even without the english version. just remember:
Sosire= arrivals
Plecare= departures
Generally speaking Lonely planet is
very vague for the frequency of the means of transport,
take into account that:
Train from Pitesti to Curtea De Argesare
mostly cancelled, and the buses leave not from Pitest
but from a district far in the north of Pitesti
(you have to take a bus)
Visiting the parlament
- don't think to visit it immediately
(although you are not just lucky); you have to book
at least the morning for the afternoon (9 am for
the 2pm enlish tour))
Stray dogs
- don't panic, but pay attention in
particular when they are in group; having a sticks
helps in the rurals areas.
